Kurt Kinetic's Magnetic trainer shares many of the attributes it's high-end Fluid trainer has: a super-stable base, a lifetime warranty on the frame and resistance unit, and a precision-machined flywheel. What it doesn't share is the price; the Kurt Magnetic saves you almost a hundred bucks off the price of the Fluid. What you do get is convenience, thanks to the handlebar-mounted thumb shifter, which uses friction instead of indexed shifting for fine-tuning your resistance. 

The Kurt Kinetic Magnetic trainer, and magnetic trainers in general, is well-suited to constant effort, distance-style training, and/or lower geared bikes, like mountain and cyclocross bikes.
